Continued expansion and interest in Rugby League, on the back of the success of the recent World Cup, has seen the European Federation advertise development officer posts for Germany and Jamaica.

The successful candidates - whose duties will include furthering domestic competition, coordinating activities with other international Rugby League bodies and acting as an Ambassador for the sport - will bolster the extended RLEF infrastructure to help cope with the increasing demand for support.

RLEF Executive & Development Officer Kevin Rudd commented, “I am pleased to be able to back the local federations in these exciting times for the sport.”

“The RLEF Board is fully committed to funding such initiatives. The hardest yards are invariably the first ones and we are determined to provide the right kind of structure at such a crucial stage in these nations progress.”

“Both countries governing bodies have made an impressive start in bringing the sport to their public and this is the next step to assist them.”

“The Jamaican position is outside of a European remit but the cultural links to the UK are obvious.”

This weekend Jamaica Head Coach Dean Thomas, who is on the staff at Sheffield Eagles, arrives in the Island to bring the international squad together for a first session under him and to undertake some coach education work.

“I will land on Saturday and take my first session on Sunday” he said on departure. “Steve Pryce will assist me and Nigel Bondwell is lead medical officer.”

“The JRLA board have organised TV and Radio interviews and I will meet the British High Commission and Sports Minister.”

“Gary Hetherington at Leeds has supported me with equipment, the West Yorkshire Police and RAF have also backed the venture and Mark Aston at the Eagles has been understanding and appreciative of my international duties.”
