East Leeds 13 West Hull 6 - East Leeds maintained their fine start to the campaign, moving up to third spot, with a hard fought win over Wests in a terrific, no-holds-barred clash.

It took a drop goal a minute from time by home stand off Luke Tomlinson to split the sides after the hosts had missed shots at goal to all three of their touchdowns.

The visitors took the lead in the 12th minute, winger Chris Whinn latching on to a stray pass on his own line and sprinting 90 metres for a spectacular score which Ian Kermon converted but that was to be their only points.

East Leeds levelled when expansive passing saw Josh Longbottom on hand to take the final pass and they took the lead three minutes from the break when a delicately weighted chip saw Chris Hindle react well to make it 8-6.

Replacement Jordan Godrich made a massive impact with his constant probing from dummy half and it was no surprise when he edged the host’s six points clear with a sniping run from dummy half.

Again the conversion was missed but the work of the Leeds pack, with Sam O’Brien, Ashley Holmes and Dan Hudson prominent - allied to clever raids from full back Bradley Langton - kept them in the ascendancy.

Hindle and Josh Cooper spent time in the sin bin for a professional foul and dissent respectively as the match built to a climax, Tomlinson seizing the late opportunity to put East Leeds just out of reach.

ROUND UP - Despite freezing conditions, over 400 hardy souls turned up to watch the Gillette Friday Night Footy derby clash between SADDLEWORTH RANGERS and WATERHEAD, the hosts running out 20-6 victors.

Rivalries were intense throughout and, somewhat predictably, the game started at a hundred miles an hour and with neither side seemingly able to hold on to the ball. Saddleworth struck fist blood with a penalty from touch by Ethan Langhorn.

A well worked scrum move put them further ahead, the overlap created allowing Thomas Heywood to go over in the corner, Langhorn excellently adding the extras.

Rangers took control and for the next 10 minutes were camped in the visitor’s quarter but the home side could not breach the resolute Waterhead defence. Gaining confidence, the visitors then swept up field for Tom McMullen to go over in the corner, Sean Garrett converting.

Saddleworth’s increasing lack of discipline began to cost them field position and it was the turn of Waterhead to apply pressure until half time but without troubling the score further.

The second half continued where the first had left off with both sides giving away ground through poor discipline or handling errors as the increasing tension began to affect them.

As the contest entered its last 10 minutes it was Saddleworth who composed themselves and after good approach work from Langhorn and quick hands from man of the match Anthony Morrison, James Greenwood crashed over from close range, Langhorn’s goal making it 14-6.

The home side had their tails up, earned themselves a series of repeat sets and with virtually the last play of the game Langhorn went from acting half to catch the visitors flat footed, scoring between the posts and converting his own effort.

A penalty goal five minutes from time by Richard Frankland ensured that the spoils were shared as FEATHERSTONE LIONS were held at the Millpond, 6-6, by KEIGHLEY COUGAR CUBS.

The game took place in atrocious, cold and wet conditions but both sides played with tremendous spirit throughout. Neither produced anything to spark the game to life in the early stages but clever hands from Frankland and Josh Hardcastle released wing Dane Kellet for Lions’ opening score.

Cougars responded before half time with a try out wide for Tom Rushworth but with the pitch cutting up badly in the second half, the points were shared with a penalty goal apiece keeping matters level. Loose forward Tom Flounders for Featherstone and Callum Hudson, who kicked Keighley’s penalty, worked tirelessly throughout.

Prop Adam Jones and classy stand off Kenny Baker were again the stars for INCE ROSE BRIDGE as they defeated Siddal 32-22. Bridge built an impressive first half lead, Michael Horton and Jordan Hankey tries giving them the perfect start and on 20 minutes second rower Houghton crossed again.

Matthew Topping made it 20-0 on the half hour, Nathan Penny adding a penalty to three conversions. The centre then crossed the whitewash at the start of the second period and added the goal, just after Michael Samples had got the visitors on the board.

The hard working Siddal pack never give up and put in a gutsy performance; Niall Bradey, Robin Taylor and Zachary Brennan all crossing in a blistering eight minute spell to make it 30-22. Ince held firm and a late Penny penalty claimed the spoils.

The match at the Brewery Field was nip and tuck for the opening 30 minutes but CELTIC CRUSADERS gradually eased clear to defeat gallant LEIGH EAST 28-10 to maintain second spot. GNYL Player of the Month for October Philip Smith began the scoring for the Welshmen, Mark Ballard replying. Nathan Davies made it 10-4 and Dalton Grant finished off outstanding work by Joe Burke to cross.

On the stroke of half time, Rhys Fenton’s blistering pace and footwork put him over, Loren Quick’s third goal, allied to one to Jamie Tibbs, making it 24-4 at the break. Leigh always looked threatening with Steven Grundy and Ryan O`Toole impressing, scrum half Ballard claiming his second touchdown and Grundy going over before Davies’ second score for the Crusaders sealed matters.

LEIGH MINERS RANGERS were comprehensive 42-0 winners over NORTH LONDON STAGS to retain top spot but heavy rain on Friday night put paid to GATESHEAD THUNDER’S clash with WEST CUMBRIA.
