Tongan coach Jim Dymock had only the bare minimum of 18 players available for selection when he sat down to name his team to play Scotland in this Saturday’s Rugby League World Cup clash at Browne Park, Rockhampton.
The squad has been depleted by injuries to key players Michael Jennings and Willie Manu, while Fui Fui Moi Moi and Taniela Tuaki remain unavailable due to eligibility rulings and will not play a game in the World Cup tournament.
Despite these obstacles the Tongan team remained upbeat as they left Sydney to set up base at Yeppoon (approx 40km north of Rockhampton) in preparation for Saturday’s 4pm kick-off against Scotland.
Scotland were impressive winners over their more fancied opponents Fiji on Wednesday night and the Tongan team are well aware that they will need to be on their game to come away with a victory in the game that is vitally important for future rankings.
“Just like when we prepared for Ireland, we won’t be treating Scotland lightly,” said Dymock. “The Scotland team has been very passionate, with a real will to win and we intend to approach the game exactly the same.
