The Lebanese Rugby League Committee conducted a day’s training camp on Sunday 30th November at Balamand University, attended by over 150 children from north Lebanon. The camp, organized in partnership with the Ministry of Education, was the latest step in the LRLC’s push to develop rugby league in the country’s schools.

LRLC Director of Coaching Remond Safi was full of praise after the day’s activities, which included two-hours of skills and technical training and two hours of full contact games.

“It was a great day for Lebanese rugby league to see the schools attending the first large training session. Lots of schools were attending the Beirut marathon so we expect to have even more next time as we have roughly 20 schools active in total. I would like to thank the schools that attended as their students who showed great enthusiasm towards learning the sport."

The pupils, whose ages ranged from 9-to-16 years old, were drawn from Balamand High School, Zehrieh boys school, Kfarhabou boys school, Amer Fakhr al Dine public school, Bikarzla, Nay School Tripoli and Nachee New School.

Safi led the camp with LRLC coaches Robin Hachache, Darwich Darwich, Nayef Abisaid and Faysal Jaber, supported by newly qualified rugby league entry level coaches from each of the schools: Hatem Hanna, Najibe Hamze, Samar Nassif, Rayan Tout and Nader Moughayt.

In a statement, the LRLC thanked the Ministry of Education for its support, particularly Adnan Hammoud and Ahmed Harrouk. The next step is a repeat of a similar camp in the north, one in Beirut, and in 2009 a series of tournaments that will enable the schools to play one another in organized competition.
