Harlequins announce London Rugby League Challenge – Sunday 22nd February 3pm kick off. The first ever London Rugby League Challenge will kick off at 3pm on Sunday 22nd February, when Harlequins Rugby League host the Australian rugby league champions, Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles.
The London Rugby League Challenge has been devised to raise the profile of rugby league in London, and give fans of the sport a thrilling international showcase-match to boot. It will be the very first time the two teams have played one another and will take place at The Twickenham Stoop.
Harlequins Rugby League head coach Brian McDermott said: “Playing Manly in the London Rugby League Challenge gives us the chance to challenge ourselves against the best team from Australia. The players are excited about this, as I'm sure will be our fans. It promises to be a great start to our campaign.”
Australian-born Harlequins Rugby League hooker, Chad Randall, spent three seasons at Manly and said he can’t wait to face his former club: “Manly are a massive club and it’ll be a great event. I’ve still got lots of mates at Manly, and I’m looking forward to taking them out in London, after the match of course!”
The London Rugby League Challenge will raise awareness among Londoners of the first class rugby league that is regularly played in the capital. Furthermore, the visit of the Manly Sea Eagles – one of the most widely-supported and highly-decorated clubs in Australia – will remind Antipodeans living in London that their favourite sport is played on their doorstep.
Harlequins chairman, Keith Hogg, said: "Everyone associated with Harlequins Rugby League is tremendously excited about the opportunity to play against the NRL Grand Final champions. Rugby League is on the up across London and the South East and the London Rugby League Challenge will provide another great boost for the sport. We hope it becomes a permanent fixture on the Rugby League calendar”
