Daily Telegraph - Coach Brian Smith's future at the Newcastle Knights will be a major discussion point at a club directors meeting tonight. Smith is off contract at the end of this year but he has not been spoken to about his future and we've been told the offer of a new deal is far from cut and dried.

The controversial Smith, who has an ally in Knights chairman Robbie Tew, is rumoured to have only lukewarm support from most other board members. Some privately believe offering the coach a new, long-term deal would be risky, given his history and the club's financial position.

For his part, Smith says he will start pursuing other potential coaching options should nothing concrete come out of tonight's meeting.
