Dragons last-minute intercept sinks the Jets. Newtown and St George turned on a thrilling SG Ball Cup trial match at the Matraville Sports High Oval last Saturday afternoon. The teams had been locked up at 4-all at half-time and the Jets (aided by a strong breeze) grafted their way to a 12-4 lead midway through the second half – but in the “time honoured” Newtown fashion found a way to lose the match in the game’s dying seconds.
Newtown Jets coach Joel Grieg was not impressed with his team’s poor completion rate in both halves and with his players’ collective inability to comply with their instructions.
Newtown’s final trial match against the Balmain Tigers next Saturday morning will be a full dress rehearsal for the commencement of the competition rounds.

Newtown Jets RLFC NSW Cup Report: The gloves are finally off – the hard training regimen continues but the Rugby League action is finally about to recommence for Newtown’s 2009 NSW Cup hopefuls.
Newtown’s NSW Cup team triallists will have an outing at the NSWRL International 9’s tournament at Cabramatta Sports Ground next weekend. The tournament, almost certainly to be conducted in searing temperatures, is programmed over Saturday and Sunday afternoons (7th and 8th February) and is sure to test the physical endurance of players, officials and spectators alike.
Newtown’s NSW Cup team coach Greg Matterson has already made some cuts to the summer training squad and will use this 9’s tournament to test out the squad’s remaining fringe candidates. Teams participating in the tournament must nominate a squad of 15 players prior to the first match.
