Dual International Andrew Walker and former NSW Blues representative David Peachey will make their long awaited returns to Rugby League when they take the field for a National Indigenous Invitational side in the Cabramatta International 9’s tournament this weekend. The competition will be held at New Era Stadium, Cabramatta on the 7th and 8th of February  and will feature teams from Japan, Fiji, the Cook Islands, Nuie as well as established NSW Cup and Bundaberg Red Cup teams.

International Development Officer and Tournament co-ordinator Tas Baitieri believes on the back of the success of the 2008 World Cup more tournaments involving developing league nations will be one of the key initiatives needed to further the game internationally.

“Our primary objective is to establish a preseason tournament accessible to any nation willing to participate and I think with the growth we have seen in the number of international teams competing we can say we are moving down the right path,” Mr Baiteri explained.

With temperatures for the weekend believed to be in the low to mid 40’s the main focus, according to Mr. Baitieri, will be on player safety.

“We have worked tirelessly to make sure that if the temperatures do reach the levels predicted we have all the necessary precautions in place.

“The NSWRL has a contingency plan in place which includes us being able to push games back into the afternoon as the weather cools down and we have a doctor on duty both days of the tournament.”

Games will run for 25 minutes in total and will consist of two nine minute halves.

The tournament will kick off at 11am on Saturday with a clash between Australia and the Pacific Islands in the Women’s side of the draw followed by the Men’s pool A clash between the Windsor Wolves and the Campbelltown Eagles.
