Rugby League fans are urged to support the victims of the Victorian bushfire disaster this Saturday when the Newcastle Knights launch their 2009 season campaign at Charlestown’s St John Oval. An appeal will be held for the people affected by Australia’s worst natural disaster with volunteers from the Rural Fire Service assisting with fundraising throughout the day.
A minutes silence will be held before First Grade kick off and all players will wear black arm bands in memory of those who perished in the devastation. “The Rugby League community always rallies behind people in need,” said Knights front rower, Daniel Tolar. “We’re expecting local fans to turn out in big numbers to see their teams in action and to raise as much money as possible for the Victorian families who are faced with having to re-build their lives from scratch.” “This is the least we can do to lend a helping hand.” The day will also see the grand opening of the newly developed St John Oval prior to the main games with Central Charlestown first to play on their new home ground when they face the first of three Knights squads. Three 25 minute periods will be contested by Central, South Newcastle and Maitland, playing for the first time since rejoining the local league. Saturday will also see the Harold Matthews and SG Ball representative teams play their first competition games for the season against Melbourne and the Roosters. Gates open at 11am and tickets are $5 at the gate - Kids under 15 get in FREE. A five match program includes; The Official Opening of the St John Oval redevelopment will commence at 6.30pm, prior to First Grade kick off. |
