By Jason Sintome - Day two of the Jetstar Gold Coast Titans Top end trek and the player’s first port of call was the Royal Darwin hospital, with Brad Meyers and David Mead joining their Cronulla counterparts and spending a few hours completing jigsaws, reading and posing for photographs with some of the hospitals sick youngsters, their parents and carers.
State of Origin Legend and Titans assistant coach Trevor Gillmeister proving a real hit with the hospitals staff.
Trevor said, “It was surprising to see how many people up this way are real Rugby League fans and they seem to have a strong connection with the Queensland teams and they certainly support the right teams when it comes to State of Origin, I hope it translates into strong support for the Titans on Saturday night.”
“Seeing the boys interact with the young kids in hospital who face more every day than the players do in a whole season is a really good experience both for the kids and the players. It doesn’t matter how successful or experienced the players are, you always find the hospital visits extremely rewarding, I think we get more out of the visits than the kids do really.”
It was then time for the Titans trio to visit Jetstar’s Top end flight training school and meet the airlines newest graduates.
For the past six weeks a group of twenty nine cabin crew trainees have been preparing for today’s graduation ceremony and from next week, their first flights.
With the graduation coinciding with the Titans Darwin visit, Meyers, Mead and Gillmeister attended the final session, congratulating the team before presenting the trainees with their official in flight manuals.
Among those graduating, Catherine Mauboy, the younger sister of Australian idol sensation Jessica, and already the younger Mauboy has bought a musical flavour to the Jetstar cabin.
Catherine said, “I love to sing and on one flight from Melbourne, I had all the trainees singing and we had a great time, the training has been hard, but fantastic and a lot of fun, I am really looking forward to starting my career as a cabin attendant with Jetstar.”
Jetstar Gold Coast Titans Coach John Cartwright and football Manager Scott Clark also commenced negotiations with Northern Territory Sports Minister Mr Karl Rio Hampton MLA, in a bid to ensure the Gold Coast Titans play regular matches in the Northern Territory.
Clark said, “Our discussions with Mr Hampton and his team today were only preliminary, however the Minister is passionate about ensuring the Northern Territory sees more elite level sport in the future, and we believe the Jetstar Titans can make a real impression in the Northern Territory through the playing staff and our commitment to Community work and developing the game.”
The Titans will attend a number of schools across Darwin tomorrow following an early morning training session, scheduled to escape the intense heat and humidity. |
