Priority signing and Knights centre, Junior Sau will wear the blue and red until at least the end of the 2011 season after agreeing to terms with Newcastle.
Sau’s signature is a major boost to the club heading into the 2009 season and comes off the back of a stellar debut year when he staked a serious claim for the Rookie of the Year.
“I’m extremely happy to be staying in Newcastle, this really feels like home to me,” Sau said.
“I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve received since joining the Knights and I hope I can make a valuable contribution to the team now my future is settled.”
“He made the most of last year he’s been rewarded for the attitude he brought with him to Newcastle,” said Knights Coach, Brian Smith.
He’s listened and responded well to his team mates and everyone at the club recognises that he’s a committed and very talented performer for the Knights.”
Sau joined Newcastle in 2008 from the Raiders NYC squad and burst onto the NRL scene against the Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium, scoring two tries on debut.
His robust playing style made him a crowd favourite at EnergyAustralia Stadium last season, further entrenched with his performance against the Storm when he tackled two Melbourne players into touch to turn the match.
“That hit where he put two Melbourne players over the touchline, his strong carries and tries he’s scored for us just makes him one of those players that puts crowds on the edge of their seats and into an excited state,” said Smith.
“He’s done everything right during pre season training and he’s got a big future ahead of him. 2009 looks like he’s very well set for an improvement on what he’s already achieved.
“Junior’s been a pleasure to coach. He’s a bright friendly, outgoing personality, he’s good from a coaching point of view and he’s well liked and respected by his team mates.
Sau will travel to Melbourne today ahead of this weekend’s second trial against the Storm.
