Gillette Friday Night Floodlit Footy - Keighley Cougar Cubs 10 Siddal 24 - Cougar Park - Siddal posted their third victory of the campaign and moved above the Cubs after taking the spoils in a lively, exciting clash.
Home winger Chris Burgoyne’s touchdown with only 17 minutes remaining, to make it 12-10 to the visitors, put the encounter in the balance but Siddal re-grouped to cross twice and complete a merited win.
Prop Sam Dalby gave Keighley the lead with a powerful run in the second minute, Callum Hudson converting and Ashley Honeymann thought that he had extended it soon after only for the final pass to be ruled forward.
As Siddal grew into the game, Andrew Maguire was forced to make a superb try saving tackle on visiting winger Dwayne Tetley when he seemed away and clear.
A minute later feisty Siddal hooker Daniel Russell made the first of two visits to the sin bin for a professional foul but on the half hour, while he was off, his side equalised; prop Benjamin Benn bursting over and adding the extras.
Jack Copperwaite had a try claim ruled out for the Cubs as the half came to an end, the referee ruling that he had lost control of the ball diving for the line.
Seven minutes into the second period Russell burrowed over to redeem himself and Benn’s second conversion made it 12-6.
Burgoyne’s touchdown had the crowd on the edge of their seats but Russell again proved to be the thorn in the Cub’s side when he repeated his earlier effort and Benn added his third goal.
Within two minutes Russell was again on the sidelines, though, this time for a high tackle, Sean Everett joining him as he ran in to sort the matter out.
On the hour, with home frustrations mounting, Ben Pickles was shown a yellow card for dissent, Benn kicked a penalty and five minutes from time Patrick Connell ensured a Siddal victory when he crossed out wide.
Featherstone Lions stayed in play off contention as they defeated London Stags 40-20 at Millpond. Stags started the better, Lions frequently spilling possession, and the visitors were rewarded with the first try through second rower Conner Boyd-Barnes, after good lead up work from Kieran Dixon and Sean Johnson.
Lions responded well, on 11 minutes excellent handling by Steve Clough and Ricky Williams paved the way for centre Jay Storey to level the scores. Four minutes later Featherstone took the lead for the first time with winger Jake Scoffins scoring the first of his four tries thanks to superb ball skills from his centre Josh Hardcastle.
Stags, however, refused to be overpowered with Mikey O’Garro and Matt Harrell making good yards, allowing hooker Dixon to sneak over from close range, the conversion giving London a 10-8 advantage. Soffins added his second just before half time when a spilled ball ran loose and the wing was the quickest to react giving Featherstone a 12-10 lead at the break.
Scoffins completed his hat-trick two minutes into the second half, Joe Flounders’s off-load allowing hooker Dane Kellett to swing the ball wide for an easy score in the corner. Tom Flounders increased Featherstone’s lead with a score on 45 minutes but again the visitors responded well with loose forward George Stevens powering his way over to reduce the gap to six points.
Lions upped a gear and two tries in three minutes from Tom Flounders and Scoffins put them back in the driving seat. Scrum half Sean Johnson got a well-deserved try for North London before Lions wrapped things up with a length of the field score by Zak Hardaker and a final try through substitute Adam Wilcox.
Two tries by scrum half Steve Williams in three minutes just after the hour mark were enough for CELTIC CRUSADERS to maintain their winning run, with a hard-fought 16-6 success at EAST LEEDS. Exciting hooker Kyle Blackmore gave the visitors the lead, Rhys Fenton converting but Easts levelled two minutes before the break through Jordan Godrich, Luke Tomlinson adding the extras.
With stand off Daffyd Carter in sparkling form for the Crusaders, they had sufficient polish to wrest the spoils, the win taking them four points clear of the Yorkshiremen, for whom Brad Langton was outstanding.
KEIGHLEY COUGAR CUBS were tremendous backing up from their Friday exertions, just going down 36-30 at home to high fliers West Cumbria.
Ashley Honeymann again had an early try ruled out, for a foot in touch, and Mark Watson gave the visitors the lead; Callum Watson replying with a penalty.
Karl Olstrum maintained his recent excellent form with a try for the Cumbrians in the 25th minute, Scott George goaling but Joseph Copperwaite replied on the 30 minute mark, his reactions superb to a wickedly bouncing ball to make it 10-8.
Dan Watson’s score two minutes before half time put the visitors in pole position, second rower Harry Kaufmann and Olstrum extending their advantage with back-to-back touchdowns straight after the re-start. Cubs staged a remarkable comeback, though, stand off Sean Kelly crossing and outstanding prop Sam Dalby going in twice in six minutes to bring it back to 26-24.
Dalby was only prevented from grabbing a deserved hat trick by some excellent defence but Wests hit back strongly, Mark Watson claiming his second try and centre Jonathan Ritson securing the points five minutes from time.
In the final minute Joshua Taylor crossed for the Cubs to give the final score a fairer reflection of the action.
Saddleworth Rangers 48 Gateshead Thunder 0 - The game started at a cracking pace with both packs dominating and hardly a metre gained but the deadlock was broken when Ethan Langhorn converted a touch line penalty.
Gateshead continued to press and kept Saddleworth pinned in there own 20, but on the third tackle Saddleworth changed tactics and kicked early catching the visitors flat footed, Matthew Fogarty running the length of the field to score only to be ruled offside. Rangers moved into expansive mode, their opening try coming from a flowing cross field move finished by Anthony Morrison in the corner.
As the first half wore on the Saddleworth hooker Scott Owen increasingly found gaps in the visitors front line and as half time approached he found Morrison on the crash ball just inside the Gateshead half who sent Steven Nield to the posts.
Tries followed at regular intervals, first from Steven Kiss from close range, then from Danny Bowker who latched on to a Greenwood pass from a early kick from Langhorn and finally on the stroke of half time Kiss went under the posts from acting half after a driving run from Langhorn to make it 30-0.
The second half followed the pattern of the first with Gateshead showing great determination not to concede again and lasting 20 minutes. Inevitably the workload began to take its toll and from the half way line Owen dummied through a gap and sprinted half the length of the pitch to score.
Again Saddleworth’s backs took control and after a driving run from Langhorn and a quick play of the ball from man of the match Owen, Callum Lee hit a gap on the visitors 20 and scored.
In the final play of the game Langhorn again kicked early into space and Thomas Whitehead ran on to the loose ball, hacking it forward for James Greenwood to score; Langhorn kicking his eighth goal.
