Yahoo Sport - Manly have become the first Australian side in six years to clinch rugby league's World Club Challenge, emphatically snatching the title from Leeds. There was plenty of spice in the 28-20 victory at Elland Road in front of 32,569 fans with brawls erupting during the match.
During a fiery opening half Sea Eagles backrower Anthony Watmough smashed Leeds No.7 Rob Burrow, putting him out of the game while Manly's Josh Perry and Leeds enforcer Jamie Peacock traded blows and were both sent to the sin bin.
Video referee Steve Ganson lived up to his reputation for controversy by awarding Leeds' Jamie Jones-Buchanan an extremely contentious try before Manly took a 12-4 halftime lead.
Sea Eagles try-scoring machine Brett Stewart crossed the line for his second four-pointer of the match two minutes into the second session and Watmough got his second from the restart.
From there, the NRL premiers weren't headed with the Rhinos finishing strongly with a try in the dying seconds of the clash. |
