Round Up - A superb long range try from winger Adam Clay gave league leaders LEIGH MINERS RANGERS an ideal start in the derby against LEIGH EAST on Thursday night. Although the hosts dominated the first half - Clay going in again after Danny Weaving had replied for Easts - they had one of their toughest matches of the campaign before emerging 18-10 victors.
Boon Rangers full back Jonathan Pownall, who landed three conversions to finish with ten points, also went over from distance before the break to establish an 18-6 lead but the visitors took the second half spoils.
With defences dominant and both sides playing some excellent controlled rugby, the only score after the interval was claimed by Easts’ best, second rower Sam Hopkins. For Rangers, there was a notable performance from prop Chris Bower who played the full 70 minutes.
The big game of the weekend, which could have decided the league leader’s spot, fell victim to the weather. Torrential rain on Sunday morning in Treorchy caused the eagerly awaited clash between CELTIC CRUSADERS COLTS and LEIGH MINERS RANGERS to be called off by the match referee. Rangers had travelled down the day before but conditions were such that postponement was the only option.
Three tries and five goals for a 22 point haul by stand off Zak Hardaker was the highlight for FEATHERSTONE LIONS as they won 38-12 at SIDDAL.
The visitors were 20 points to the good at the break, Hardaker opening the scoring in the tenth minute. Tom Flounders followed him over and Hardaker went in again chasing an astute kick from scrum half Adam Jones.
Right on half time Adam Willcocks crossed for the Lions and Hardaker completed his treble two minutes in to the second period. Prop Joshua Sandland crashed over for the hosts to open their account but Willcocks claimed his brace soon after. Sandland bagged a second for Siddal, Steve Clough claiming the seventh try for Featherstone in response.
In the final minute, Carl Hancock scored a consolation touchdown for the home side who battled hard but struggled to contain the visiting half backs.
WEST HULL maintained their play off hopes with a dogged 16-0 win in Hemel against NORTH LONDON STAGS. On a very cold, wet and windy afternoon, conditions inhibited expansive play.
The match began with a minutes silence for the father of Stags’ scrum half, Sean Johnson and for the opening 15 minutes West Hull were firmly camped in the Stags half. Man of the match Nathan Parkinson made the most of the possession to cross for the opening score, Chris Whinn converting.
With defences dominating, on the half hour, after a penalty had been awarded for a high tackle, West’s Andy Bark was dismissed for retaliation. Too many handling errors from both teams made for a slow scrappy game but rain relented in the second half and Stags dominated.
They caught on the counter with a breakaway try from second rower Jack Fenwick, Liam East adding the extras. Five minutes from time, Anthony Tognolia added a third try as the hosts tired, Eats’s conversion attempt hitting the post.
