Gold Coast identity George Doniger is preparing for the ride of his life next week when he participates in the Jetstar Gold Coast Titans MothersMilkBank Currumbin to Cairns Charity Ride. The 68-year-old, who is best known as Queensland’s top rugby league caller in the 1970s, is gearing up to tackle the 1783km ride from Currumbin to Cairns to raise funds for the MothersMilkBank charity.

The Jetstar Gold Coast Titans have already put their hands up to sponsor the ride and it is hoped that $50,000 will be raised for the charity, which desperately needs funding to set up a new community milk bank building on the Gold Coast.

The primary role of the MothersMilkBank is to provide pasteurised donor human milk to mothers who are unable to breastfeed.

Doniger, sporting a sleek Jetstar Titans bike riding outfit, will commence his ride on Monday, March 16 and finish on Friday, April 3. He will start and finish each day at IGA stores up the east coast of Queensland.

Doniger has called on the community to support the ride by donating generously. To donate towards the Jetstar Gold Coast Titans MothersMilkBank Currumbin to Cairns Charity Ride, log onto www.titans.com.au

“I haven’t been doing any extra training, I usually ride three days a week anyway and it’s not as if it’s a race,’’ said Mr Doniger.

“I’ve allowed myself five to six hours a day to get from the IGA stores at the start to the IGA stores at the finish so in my mind I have no problems with that.

“One hundred kilometres a day sounds a long way but to be perfectly honest, it’s achievable.’’

Director of the MothersMilkBank Marea Ryan, who set up the non-profit company in 2006, said it was terrific to have the support of both Mr Doniger and the Jetstar Titans.

“Today is all about raising awareness and gathering as much support as we can all the way from Currumbin to Cairns,’’ she said.

“The MothersMilkBank needs funds so that we can provide pasteurised donor milk to mothers of babies who need it.

“The MothersMilkBank has freezers full of milk and we have babies who need the milk - the only thing stopping us from providing that milk is funding.

“The fantastic Gold Coast Titans, our local heroes, have come on board to sponsor us and we appreciate that so much.’’
