As the anticipation builds around the Newcastle Knights 2009 Season, the Newcastle Permanent Junior Development Program broke new ground in Maitland this week, smashing all previous attendance records for a Junior Football Clinic in the Newcastle and Hunter Valley region.
A record 700 registrations were accepted for the annual Maitland Rugby League Blitz, eclipsing previous attendances by more than 200.
“The response was been overwhelming,” said Community Development Manager, Matt Lantry.
“We’ve catered for between 400 to 500 in previous years but to have 700 registrations is beyond belief.
“If this is an indication of the health of Rugby League in our region the game is in great shape,” he said.
Newcastle Permanent CEO, Terry Millett said it’s fantastic to see so many young people participating in the clinics.
The Junior Development Program provides a range of events and activities that promote the benefits of regular physical activity and team building.
“Not only do the children have the opportunity to meet some of their football heroes they are also exposed to some very positive messages, including the importance of team work, fitness, healthy lifestyle and being sun smart,” Mr. Millet said.
Knights players, Richard Fa’aoso, Tim Natusch and Club Legend, Tony Butterfield joined in on the activities along with a line up of the Knights National Youth Competition players before signing autographs and handing out giveaways, further enhancing the club’s Community involvement.
Newcastle Knights CEO, Steve Burraston reiterated the link between the growing popularity of Rugby League in the game’s heartland and the Knights strategic growth plans.
“We were overwhelmed with the response to the recent Cessnock Rugby League Blitz but this week’s turnout was astounding,” said Steve Burraston.
“Even more satisfying are the levels of juniors taking up Rugby League in our region. We believe this is a growing trend due to hard work and commitment to ensure Rugby League remains the region’s number one code,” said Steve Burraston.
“The Newcastle Permanent Junior Development Program is at the forefront of our success,” he said.
Newcastle Permanent Junior Development Officers also incorporated the NRL’s Eat Well, Stay Well, Play Well initiative at the Blitz, teaching students the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle and targeting childhood obesity. |
