If Mark Taufua had his way he’d be making his first appearance for 2009 under different circumstances. After travelling to the Gold Coast as 18th man last weekend the former rugby convert has been named in the starting front row, replacing Daniel Tolar who will spend the next six weeks sidelined with a fractured knee cap.

“It’s unfortunate what happened to Dan Tolar, he’s been a standout through the off season and the trials but the opportunity came and I’m looking forward to it,” said Taufua.

Monday night’s Round two clash against the Sharks is a chance for Taufua to build his case for a regular berth in the Knights top 17 after re-signing with Newcastle late last season.

“I’ve just been trying to bide my time. I’m still learning from the older and more experienced guys and now my chance has come I’m ready to go.”

The Woodberry junior brings added sting to the Newcastle pack as one of the club’s most ruthless defenders, averaging over 13 tackles in his seven appearances in 2008.

“Mark gets an opportunity, he’s been one of our better trainers through the pre season,” said Smith.

“Obviously everyone’s disappointed for Dan, I thought he was probably our best player through the opening quarter and while we led 14 nil he led the way but Dan’s sustained an injury and Mark gets his chance which is great for him.”

The Coach says Knights fans can expect a more rounded performance on Monday night...the cooler southern weather just one benefit as the team sets out to turn around a shaky start.

“We were disappointed with the last 50 minutes of the game.”

“At the 30 mark we weren’t totally in control. We played some good footy, we’d been in charge of most things and would still like to improve on that bit but we were very disappointed with the way we fell away from that point with some uncharacteristic things from us.”

“We’re counting on major improvements this week.”
