Suncorp Stadium , Friday night - Penalties, knock-ons, referee decisions, all gave fans something to whine about which ever team they were supporting. We will never know if a missed knock-on by the two referees leading to the Wallace try would have changed the result.
One thing we do know was that the Broncos were slightly in front on the RLCM Stats sheet.
One Stat that does stand out was the kicking and the kick defence by Melbourne.
The Broncos got to their kick on 21 of the 43 Sets they had.
On the other hand, the Melbourne Storm only had 13 kicks out of their 41 Sets for the game.
A possible reason for why the Storm was in so much trouble during the game came from their negative play after nine of these kicks.
RLCM Stats showed that they only achieved four positive Sets in Defence from their 13 kicks.
Gave Penalties - On four occasions after their kick, the Storm gave penalties to the Broncos. This being plays first half Sets 3, 6, 28 and second half Set 2. Negative
Over 50m - On another five occasions, the Broncos were able to bring the ball back to over the 50m mark. Negative
Beyond 35m - They were only able to contain the Broncos to within their 35m area for their kick on three occasions. Positive
Repeat Set - Only once did they receive the ball back from one of their kicks in-goal. Positive
Their positive plays with regards to their kicking were 30%. Not good enough.
Although the game was close, this Stat did not create the pressure that should have been put on the Broncos down their end of the ground.
That is definitely one reason why the Storm lost the game and it was the own fault. There is no one else to blame.
