News - As a consequence of a decision by BARLA, which means that Leigh East must play Rylands in the Northern Rail & Sportsmatch National Youth Cup semi-final next Sunday, the Gillette National Youth League fixture between Leigh East and Celtic Crusaders cannot now go ahead, and has been awarded as a 0-0 void fixture.
However, with Leigh Miners Rangers not having a match scheduled for that date, the top two sides will now meet in a mouthwatering clash, leading into the play offs with Celtic traveling to Kirby Road. Unbeaten Rangers need a point from next Thursday’s visit to Saddleworth to ensure finishing in top spot.
Round Up - CELTIC CRUSADERS kept some pressure on Leigh Miners at the top with an ultimately convincing, ten try success over EAST LEEDS.
The Yorkshiremen, who started superbly, will now need to win both of their remaining matches to make sure that they make the top six. Rugby league returned to Treherbert for the first time in over 99 years, the famous Tynewydd R.M. Park last playing host to a game in the 13-man code in February 1910 when Merthyr Tydfil were victorious.
It was the visitors, though, who threatened to spoil the occasion, racing to a 12-4 lead inside 14 minutes. Stand off Nathan West was first to cross, Gareth Hynes converting and although Christian Hawkes replied for Celtic, Brad Langton raced in for Easts.
Loose forward Mark Wool, back after four months out injured, inspired the Crusaders’ comeback with two touchdowns in five minutes, both converted by Alex Webber. Dan Godwin and Dalton Grant both found the line before the break as the hosts hit over drive to go in at the break 26-12 ahead.
Hooker Kyle Blackmore increased the lead five minutes into the second half, Wool completing his comeback hat trick just before the hour. Stand off Dafydd Carter converted his own try soon after, as did Webber, and Philip Smith brought up the half century and ended a 46 point unanswered barrage just before the final whistle.
NORTH LONDON STAGS went down 38-18 to KEIGHLEY COUGAR CUBS at New River Stadium, ending their hopes of catching their opponents on the ladder. Cubs led 24-4 at the break thanks to a brace of tries from Joe Copperwaite, a third to winger Ashley Honeymann and one just before half time for Shaun Everett; Calum Hudson converting all four.
North London’s reply came from Mikey O’Garro but the Stags showed great spirit to cross twice within five minutes of the re-start to put the contest back in the melting pot. Erik Grimley and hooker Kieran Dixon proved unstoppable, Sean Johnson converting the second but two quick tries in response made the outcome safe for the visitors.
Charlie Ecclestone scored with a great finish on the left and Honeymann’s second on the right proved to be the game breaker. Stags felt that the sin binning of Dixon late on for holding down was harsh during which time Chris Burton showed great pace to storm clear on the right. Norths gained some consolation when George Stevens reached over from close range for the final score.
Controversy reigned at Whitehaven’s Recreation Ground when referee Adam Kirkbride abandoned the game between WEST CUMBRIA and LEIGH EAST after claiming that he could not control the sideline, following the sending off East’s second rower Keiron Johnson.
The opening exchanges were tough from both sides, Scott George converting a penalty close to the Leigh posts to open the scoring. A couple of minutes later, Callum Phillips regathered his own chip over the advancing Leigh defensive line and from the resulting play, the ball was swept from right to left and Shane Ackerley crossed in the corner for an unconverted try.
On 15 minutes George landed a penalty and a minute later the lead was extended when a short pass from Phillips released Adam Ramsden on a fine, angled run and he fed the supporting Karl Olstrum who scored out wide.
In the 23rd minute Kieran Glenn supported another break by George - who found him with a one handed pass - to score, George adding the extras. Just before the half hour another Phillips pass found Ramsden who crossed out wide but, contensciously that was the end of the scoring.
SIDDAL maintained their recent good form with a smash and grad raid at GATESHEAD THUNDER. With a new coach at the helm, the visitors made a disastrous start, finding themselves 14-0 down in the opening exchanges.
Stand off Anthony Bowman led the response with a fine hat trick, Carl Hancock also crossing for the visitors, as they scored 20 unanswered points. Thunder could have claimed a share of the spoils when they crossed with the last play but the conversion that would have drawn the match slipped agonising wide of the posts.
