Huddersfield scrum-half Luke Robinson scored twice in an eight-try 46-6 demolition of Harlequins in the Super League on Sunday as they won at home for the first time since July last year.
Robinson took advantage of a wind-assisted forward kick to power over for his first try just before half-time to leave the Giants 28-0 up after the break.
He then further increased Huddersfield's lead on 60 minutes when a pass from Brett Hodgson put him in the clear.
Huddersfield's victory was their first at the Galpharm Stadium since a 25-24 win over Bradford near the end of last season.
Stephen Wild, Shaun Lunt, Hodgson, Keith Mason and Kevin Brown (2) also crossed for the Giants while Danny Ward scored Harlequins' only try.
Paul Johnson claimed two tries as Warrington finally secured their first Super League win of the season at the sixth attempt as they beat Hull KR 24-12.
The Wolves looked a different team from the one that has struggled throughout the opening weeks of the campaign as they ground down Hull KR at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Ben Harrison set Tony Smith's side on the way with an early try while Michael Monaghan and the much-maligned Matt King also got on the scoresheet in a vastly-improved display.
Rovers, who missed the chance to move within a point of leaders Leeds, claimed consolations through Peter Fox and Makali Aizue.
Meanwhile the RFL postponed the day's evening fixture between Celtic Crusaders and Wakefield Wildcats due to "unforeseen circumstances" - the announcement coming 35 minutes before the televised match was scheduled to kick-off.
On Saturday comeback man Dave Halley earned Bradford their first win of the Super League season with the last play of the match as the Bulls beat Catalans Dragons 30-24.
The winger had been recalled from a loan spell at Wakefield earlier this week and returned to score an amazing 80th-minute try to ease the pressure on boss Steve McNamara.
Rikki Sheriffe, Terry Newton, Semi Tadulala and Steve Menzies also bagged touchdowns for the Bulls. Greg Bird, Jean Philippe Baile, Vincent Duport and Olivier Elima scored Catalans' tries.
St Helens ended Leeds' unbeaten start to the new season on Friday night, while Hull also lost for the first time.
At Knowsley Road, evergreen centre Keith Senior became only the second player to score tries in all 14 seasons of Super League but champions Leeds lost their 100 per cent record as they tumbled to a 26-18 defeat.
The 32-year-old marked his return from a shoulder injury with his 170th and 171st Super League tries to emulate the feat of Saints hooker Keiron Cunningham.
But Senior was overshadowed by his England team-mate Leon Pryce, who was given the honour of leading Saints out on his 100th appearance and celebrated with a polished display to help his side to their fifth win of the season.
Matt Gidley went over for the game's opening try but Leeds struck back within five minutes through a well-worked try from Senior.
Saints struck twice in a five-minute spell before half-time to regain control. Second rower Chris Flannery was put through a hole in the Rhinos defence by Sean Long and substitute James Roby was in support to touch down before Pryce went on a solo run to claim his side's third try, with Long adding his third goal.
Things turned feisty after the interval but the champions were the first to regain their composure and pulled a try back after 50 minutes when left winger Ryan Hall crossed.Kevin Sinfield converted from the touchline to cut the gap to six points.
However, Saints found their second wind and clinched victory with two further tries in the final quarter.
Pryce got Jon Wilkin into his stride and full-back Paul Wellens linked to send teenage winger Gary Wheeler over at the corner and Flannery then broke clear to put Gidley in for his second try.
Leeds at least had the final say when Senior burst through for his second try in injury time and Sinfield added his third touchline goal to ensure his side stay top of the table on points difference.
At the KC Stadium, Brent Sherwin's 77th-minute drop goal brought Hull's perfect start to an abrupt end as Castleford turned the form book upside down with a 19-18 win.
Richard Agar's side appeared to be on course for a sixth win in six matches after four tries shared between the Horne brothers Richard and Graeme had given them an 18-12 lead.
But with the usually reliable Danny Tickle failing with three of his four conversion attempts, Castleford were never out of the game and Ryan McGoldrick's try, coupled with Sherwin's drop goal, earned them the win.
It was credit to Terry Matterson's men that they secured a fourth win of the campaign but Agar will surely look upon this as two points dropped in his side's bid to banish the memories of their awful season in 2008, when they finished second bottom, one place above Castleford.
In the night's other game, top-rated teenagers Sam Tomkins and Shaun Ainscough scored two tries apiece as Wigan powered to a morale-boosting engage Super League win at Salford.
Stand-off Tomkins showed pace and real star quality with two long-range touchdowns while fellow 19-year-old Ainscough was not to be outdone in the 38-12 triumph.
Thomas Leuluai also grabbed a brace while Pat Richards touched down once and kicked five goals to prolong struggling Salford's miserable start to the campaign.
Salford could at least celebrate the performance of their own potential star in 18-year-old Richard Myler, who claimed both the hosts' tries. |
