NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS AND PETERLEE PUMAS served up a thriller, the Knights holding on for a 24-20 win to go joint second with their opponents. A game which was anticipated as being a very close contest beforehand did not disappoint as both teams battled for the lead throughout in a very competitive match. Newcastle opened the scoring after ten minutes from a chip and chase from 30 metres out, Pumas responding with a try from Matt Storey on the left. Peterlee had a try disallowed out wide before Newcastle broke 60 metres but knocked on.

Two penalties piggybacked Newcastle up the field and they crossed in the corner to lead 10-4 at the break. Puma’s Luke Watson broke from half way, crossed between the posts and added the extras after the break  to level and 18 year old debutant Michael McDougall put them ahead soon after, Watson converting. Newcastle recovered possession from the kick off and hit back with consecutive unconverted tries out wide to lead.

Pumas fought to the end, John Dixon going over in the corner and they had another try disallowed in the dying seconds of the game which would have seen the score again level with the kick to come.

NORTHALLERTON STALLIONS continued their promising start making it three wins from four outings with a 42 – 20 victory over SUNDERLAND NISSAN.

The visitors took an early lead following poor Stallions defence before a defensive error allowed home centre Nick Croker the opportunity to bring the scores level with a simple touchdown. Seven minutes later Stallions forced a Sunderland drop out and a great return from stand off Steve Horsley set up the position for Rob Johnson to score.

Horsley added the conversion to give the hosts a 10 – 4 lead going into the second quarter. Another good Horsley break put winger Graham Schofield in space and the youngster finished well. Horsley was wide with the extras but with six minutes to the break, Matt Lambert-Cluderan scored the first of two quick fire tries. Both conversions were missed but on the half time whistle scrum half Johnson scored his trade mark length of the field interception try.

With captain Lee Worsnop tagging on the two points Northallerton enjoyed a 28– 4 lead at the break. The second half started well for the visitors who scored twice in the first thirteen minutes bringing the score to 28–16, enjoying a real purple patch as the hosts struggled to find their first half form. Northallerton regained the initiative, though, when Johnson crossed for his hat trick following an outrageous dummy on 57 minutes finishing a fine 90 metre move.

Two tries in four minutes from Mark Ball, the first converted by Horsley, gave the home side a 42– 16 lead but Sunderland enjoyed the final score with three minutes remaining.

WHITLEY BAY BARBARIANS put in another improved show, going down 24-53 at home to HARTLEPOOL. Winger Matt Lee opened the scoring for the Barbarians but they were 23-4 down at the break thanks to tries from props Jordan Baggs and Paul Moss, Andrew Turner and James Campbell, Moss kicking three conversions and a drop goal.

Stand off James Scott increased their lead at the start of the second half but the Barbarians enjoyed a purple patch, Steven Berrey and Jordan Robinson going over for tries and Anthony Miller a goal to make it 35-14. Campbell, Moss and Turner each scored a second for ‘Pool, Moss converting all three, Robison grabbing his brace and Rob Sykes completing the scoring for the Bay.

JARROW VIKINGS stay top thanks to a 52-10 success away at WINLATON WARRIORS.
