On the first really warm day of the summer VALLEY COUGARS came out on top 39-16 in a sizzler at St Albans RFC with a display of open free flowing rugby to defeat CARDIFF DEMONS.

Cougars grabbed control from the off, a great kick at the end of the first set pounced on by Hwyl Lloyd who dived over to open the scoring. Cardiff responded immediately with a kick off that the Cougars allowed to cross the dead ball line and from the subsequent drop out a good return from Andrew Bradshaw set up Graham Hughes to cross, Chris Holcome’s conversion giving the Demons a 6-4 lead. On ten minutes James Allen crossed for the Cougars and the conversion from Ceri Cummins gave them back the lead.

As things settled down the teams tested each other out until the thirty minute mark where the Valley’s Allen added his second. A conversion and a drop goal four minutes later from Cummins gave the Cougars a 17-6 lead at the break.

They extended it at the beginning of the second half with a converted try from Mark Wool but that seemed to spur the Demons on who scored two quick tries from Jamie Isles in the corner and Mark Dando between the posts. Conversions from Holcome and Shane Goddard closed the gap to seven at 16-23.

A clever kick off from the Cougars saw man of the match Rhodri Morris recover the ball and on the next play boost their lead as Lloyd picked up his second touchdown. Demons’ heads seemed to drop and the Cougars capitalised with another two tries from Daf Hillard and Jonathon Watts.

BRIDGEND BLUE BULLS continued their winning ways with an impressive performance in sticky conditions at Aberavon Quinns sweeping aside NEATH PORT TALBOT STEELERS with a 48-10 win. The first half belonged to the Blue Bulls who posted thirty unanswered points which effectively killed off the game as a contest before the break. A hat trick from Matthew Hutchins and one from Shaun Owens put them in early control.

A length of the field run from Carl Davies set up Owens for his second and with one conversion from Hutchins and four from Jamie Murphy the die was cast. The half time team talk for the Steelers seemed to have worked as they came out all guns blazing and within two minutes Dai Fenton has scored ten unanswered points with two tries and a conversion making the score 30-10.

Bridgend steadied the ship when Murphy crossed again and another conversion extended the lead to twenty six points. That seemed to end the Steelers revival as the Blue Bulls kicked on with tries from Cameron Shannon, Craig Fox and Farrell Dan.

DINEFWR SHARKS picked up their first points of the season with a 70-6 demolition of the new boys from St Clears WEST WALES WILD BOARS in the local derby. The home team came flying out of the blocks with twenty four unanswered points with scores from Andrew Read, Steph Jones, Stephen Simms and Dai Norman.

Two conversions from Norman and two from Read gave the Sharks a commanding 24-0 lead. The Boars got on the score sheet at the half hour with a try from veteran John Ellis and a conversion from Matt Cullen. There was one more score for the Sharks before the break as Norman picked up his second which he converted.

Despite an enormous amount of heart and some great work the Boars were unable to cross the line again and succumbed to another second half mauling at the hands of their local rivals. Alan Pope picked up a hat trick with the last being the try of the day as he ran the length of the field fending of three players. Simon Stronham picked up a brace, the first of which saw some slick handling before he crossed the whitewash.

Further tries from Dean Bronham and Kenneth Dennard finished off the game together with six conversions in the half from Read. Ashley Baxter from the Sharks said, “The Wild Boars never stopped playing and showed some good skills but we had a great game. I’m really pleased that we’ve picked up our first points in the last two years and have done it in style”.

BLACKWOOD BULLDOGS went top of the league on points difference with a 74-20 thrashing of NEWPORT TITANS.

North West Premier
A three try burst at the start of the second half saw BLACKPOOL SEA EAGLES pick up their first win of the season, 58-26 as RHYL COASTERS opened their campaign. Anthony Clark and prop Chris Connaughton, together with two Karl Davies goals gave the Sea Eagles an early 12 point lead, Tom Mottran and Simon Kennard replying for the Coasters, Ben Syme with a conversion.

Loose forward Brett Whitehead edged Blackpool further ahead but just before the break Tom Beaumont went over for Rhyl to make it 18-14. Straight after the interval Whitehead claimed his second, half backs Joseph Bullock and Stephen Galvin going over in quick succession to put the visitors in control.

Hooker Gareth Davis got one back for the Coasters, Rob Sloman responding on the hour. Rhyl showed great tenacity, Kyle Robertson finding the try line with 15 minutes to go but Blackpool finished the half as they had started it with three tries in eight minutes from Karl Davies, Kenneth Davies and a hat trick score to Whitehead.

WIDNES SAINTS won the battle of the unbeaten sides, holding off NEW BROUGHTON RANGERS 44-20 while RUNCORN joined WIGAN RIVERSIDERS on four points when they posted a thrilling 46-36 success.

Southern Premier
Luke Bonnor and Jamie Lester grabbed two tries each as SOUTH LONDON STORM continued their unbeaten start to the season with a hard fought 56-18 win over their rivals from the North of the capital, LONDON SKOLARS.

The home side made their now customary good start with an early try to Steve Guan on two minutes that was converted by Tom Bold. The next 10 minutes saw the visitors under almost constant pressure but a combination of solid defence and over playing in possession meant the scoreboard was not troubled again until the fifteen minute mark when Skolars winger Takunda Muno dashed 70 metres, for a great intercept try, the conversion by Doug Hann levelling matters.

Skolars then edged ahead on twenty minutes when David Bowen finished off a slick attack. Mike Benson reduced the deficit with a clever finish in the left corner and Storm gained the initiative with two tries in the three minutes before half time.

Bonnor supported Benson,s break to cross between the posts winger Andy Pryor grabbed the try of the day on debut gathering the ball from a kick on the last tackle and then out pacing the entire Skolars defence on a 75 metre sprint to the line. Two Bold conversions left Storm ahead 22-12 at the break.

Two near identical scores from Lester in seven minutes sealed the points for them, on both occasions he followed up grubber kicks from Bonnor to cross. That was the end of the scoring until a late flurry of tries, firstly from Skolars through Jason Hayward. With eight minutes left Carl Zachorow crept in on the right wing and Bold then finished off a five man move.

Bonnor again and Pryor stretched the lead although the final score was harsh on a much improved Skolars side who battled hard for eighty minutes.

Three tries in ten minutes just after the hour mark saw ST ALBANS CENTURIONS home against a stubborn ELMBRIDGE EAGLES, 36-18. The opening ten minutes also saw a trio of touchdowns, second rower David Coyle opening the scoring for the Centurions but Eagles taking the lead when Dan Saxby and Doug Rodman crossed for unconverted efforts. Jacques Steynberg’s effort and an Andrew John goal edged the hosts back in front, Andy Lake extending their advantage with a try on the half hour.

Loose forward Rodman responded with his second, Rick Mee converting to make it 16-14 at the break. Paul Maloney made it 20-14 four minutes into the second half and the arm wrestle was even until the hour when the heat told on the visitors. Brett Walsh, Lake and John all crossed in quick succession although Elmbridge had the consolation of the final score, from Aaron Beesley, as a reward for their efforts.

WEST LONDON SHARKS set up a mouth watering clash with their South London counterparts next weekend by turning in their best performance of the season to comfortably beat IPSWICH RHINOS 90-16. The Sharks scored on just the second tackle of the game and went on to run in 16 tries in a complete display of team work.

Their stand out performance came from Ben Moriarty.

Yorkshire Premier
An inspirational first 20 minutes masterminded by hooker Andy Robinson, gave COTTINGHAM PHOENIX an unassailable lead at SCARBOROUGH PIRATES.

Pirates fought back valiantly in the second period but the experience of travelling side kept them in control and secured a 35-22 win. Robinson, Dale Allinson and Nathan Shephardson all went over in early on for Cottingham, Robinson landing two goals. Winger Oliver Battye claimed Scarborough’s first points with a fine try, converted by James Milward but Robinson cancelled that out on the half hour with his brace. Milward and Oliver Smith swapped tries in the closing stages of the half,  Milward also landing a penalty to make it 28-12 at the break.

Paul Kirby looked to have wrapped up the points for Phoenix in the 44th minute with his try but Scarborough hit back strongly, Craig Marsden and Battye claiming two tries in eight minutes. The only other point was a drop goal from the dominant Robinson seven minutes from time.

Injuries, which saw EAST RIDING down to 12 men after 20 minutes in hot conditions, enabled KIPPAX KNIGHTS to post 82 points without reply as the newcomers went second. At the end of the opening quarter it was only 8-0, left sided pairing of Richard Stone and Robert Kirk crossing.

Knights led 36-0 at the break, Danny Gill, Johnny Haywood, Stone and Warren Leafe claiming tries with skipper Gavin Adkin landing four goals. Kippax added eight more tries after the break, winger Ricky Fisher leading the way with three. Kirk and Gill claimed doubles and appropriately named prop Tom Strong, Adam Withington and Andrew Dobson also found the line. Adkin claimed the final and 16th try to go with five more goals bringing his personal tally to 22 points.

MOORENDS-THORNE MOOR MARAUDERS retained their place at the top with a narrow 28-26 win at LEEDS AKKIES.

Midlands
A thrilling display of running rugby earned BRISTOL SONICS an impressive 42-20 win over COVENTRY BEARS at Little Stoke Park. The visitors opened the scoring on 15 minutes when Matt Randall forced his way over close to the posts but were soon on the back foot as Bristol roared back in emphatic style.

Tries from Dan Evans, Tom Curtis and Ed Tofts gave the home side a 14-6 lead at half time. The Sonics, who have not lost a Conference home game for nearly three years, edged further ahead when smart work from John-Jo Burden and Joel Keane created the space for Curtis to squeeze over in the corner for his second try.

Coventry refused to fold and were soon right back in it, winger Tom O'Toole finishing off a smart move down the right. The game turned in a breathtaking 10-minute spell just past the hour as the home side stepped on the gas with four well-worked tries to set up a significant win.

First Evans crossed for his second after a Coventry mistake, before Johan Schoeman touched down following a sweet inside ball from the impressive Dom Swann. Further tries from Swann and prop Chris Carter secured the Sonics' second win of 2009.

Late tries from O'Toole and Andy Lewis proved scant consolation for the Bears who were thoroughly out-played by a Bristol side in top form.

LEICESTER PHOENIX maintained the pressure at the top with a fine 26-15 win over DERBY CITY at Haslams. Both sides produce solid defence and fine attacking play but the Phoenix took the spoils with some aggressive defence in the Derby half in the second period, denying the home side a sniff of a comeback.

TELFORD RAIDERS came close to ending GLOUCESTERSHIRE WARRIORS’ unbeaten start to the season but the visitors eventually came through 28-16 in a hard-fought encounter at Telford Hornets.

The Warriors established a 12-0 lead with James Comber and Alex Smith scoring tries converted by Tom Bozzard in the opening quarter but ten minutes into the second period, Paul Szehofner and Parminder Tutt had crossed with two Steffan Hildreth conversions to level matters and put the game in the melting pot.

Both sides produced ferocious defence and exciting attack in an attempt to break the deadlock until two tries from Matt Hurdle in six minutes around three-quarter time, both converted by Ben Hough, put the Warriors two scores ahead. Tutt struck back for the Raiders with a classy try to keep them in touch, however, a late try from Hough sealed a priceless win for the Warriors in a tremendous game.

There was more woe for REDDITCH RAVENS at St Augustine’s as they crashed to an 82-0 mauling at the hands of BIRMINGHAM BULLDOGS. The Doggies ran in 15 tries with Mark Court and Drew Harper each bagging hat-tricks.

Adam Kyle collected 24 points from a try and 10 goals. Once Rich Morris opened the scoring for the Bulldogs, the home defence struggled to cope with wave after wave of attacks and the Bulldogs were able to score almost at will.

Clinton Tull, Court, Kyle, Mark Abel and Harper’s first two tries gave the Bulldogs a 38-0 lead at the interval and the gallant but outgunned Ravens defence wilted in the heat as second half tries from Tull, Sam Woodward, Court with two, Harper, Ross Midgely, Chris Thomas and Chris Balmforth kept the scoreboard rising. Gareth Harcombe added a goal to the Bulldogs’ impressive tally
