League-leaders JARROW VIKINGS continued their unbeaten season but were pushed all the way by an ever-improving NORTHALLERTON STALLIONS in an entertaining game at Brompton Lodge.

Two Vikings scores in the closing stages and a Rob Johnson try for the home side left the full time score at 30-48 to the visitors but their hosts put in a huge effort which further underlines the progress being made by the North Yorkshire club.

The opening exchanges were an even affair but it was Jarrow who drew first blood on the quarter-hour when they pounced on a dropped Stallions pass to score a converted try. The visitors profited further from a Northallerton error soon after when a Rob Johnson penalty failed to find touch and Jarrow returned the ball to score.

Although the conversion was missed, the lead was extended to 0-14 when good approach work by the Vikings exploited weak home tackling.

Another Northallerton knock-on and more frail defence gifted a further 6 points to take the score to 0-20 as half time approached. When the Stallions controlled the ball they looked promising in attack and their reward came when Jarrow were penalised for a ball steal and from the resulting tap, livewire hooker Matt Lambert-Cluderay nipped in to give Mike Sheeran a simple conversion.

Jarrow got the best possible start to the second period when poor home defence and a good passing move again gifted them an unconverted try but Northallerton rallied and an Adam Lonsdale try - improved by Sheeran - brought them back into the game at 12-24.

The sides traded points with two Jarrow tries matched by home scores from Lambert Cluderay and a great 60 metre effort from Stallions man of the match Dave Nunnery to set up an exciting climax.

Northallerton failed to read a short kick-off and Jarrow punished the mistake. A further try from a Stallions knock-on gave the Vikings victory but the Stallions had the last action when Johnson's chip and chase brought the final converted try of the afternoon.

SUNDERLAND NISSAN threw the third and fourth place race wide open with a surprise 32-28 win at NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS.

PETERLEE PUMS consolidated second spot with an 86-10 win at WHITLEY BAY BARBARIANS who were in the contest for half and hour before being overwhelmed.

Pumas full back Leigh Wheatley started the game in scintillating fashion, crossing twice in the opening seven minutes. Barbarians responded when Steven Berrey was first to react to a kick to the corner and crossed wide on the right.

Luke Watson hit back immediately from a short kick off and 16 year old centre James Daniels got on the end of the next pumas shift wide, Watson again converting. Jamie McCluskey was sin binned for an alleged high tackle and Whitley Bay capitalized, Michael Harrigan crossing and Anthony Miller adding the goals. Pumas regained control in the run up to the break, Zac McCluskey from the scrum base, Owen Edwards and Watson again all crossing in quick succession.

Matt Story added the final try of the half to make it 46-10 t the break. Prop Mark Watson brought up the half century, Daniels claimed his second and Luke Watson another.

James Clarke, clearing a Barbarians kick, set up Storey and Luke Watson went in again from a scrum move. Storey got a third from half way and Andrew Rollins was on the end of a flowing move. Edwards grabbed a second and Zac McCluskey sold a dummy on half way for his brace.

London & South
In the clash of the top two, GREENWICH ADMIRALS extended their lead at the summit to five points to take the minor premiership but were pushed all the way by SWINDON ST GEORGE, winning 30-28.

GUILDFORD GIANTS took a huge step towards a play off berth when they beat nearest challengers OXFORD CAVALIERS 28-22 at hiome.

South West
EAST DEVON EAGLES were involved in a hard fought battle, beating DEVON SHARKS 20-18 to stay unbeaten at the top of the league. A strong Sharks side with a much changed line up put the Eagles to the test.

Eagles were unlucky not to score when skipper Dave McCarthy was held up on the line but on 15 minutes Sharks hit back, the ball being spun out for Dave Wellbeloved to crash over, Matt Jackson converting. Eagles replied five minutes later when Mark Wathes crossed in the corner but the difficult conversion failed.

Sharks went further ahead with an unconverted try by Matt Allinson and, just before half time, Eagles gave away a penalty, kicked by Jackson, to give the visitors a 12-4 lead at the break.

The second half saw the Eagles on the score board after five minutes when Mike Wilson put up a high kick near the posts and Jascha Saeck was on hand to take the bomb. After 55 minutes, Sharks increased their lead further with a try by Russell Morris, converted by Jackson to look likely winners.

Eagles had other ideas, Garry Hooper made a break up the touchline and Adam Morris was on hand on the outside pass to touch down wide out, Shaun Fayter converting to leave the hosts trailing by two points. With the end of the game in sight, Wathes broke through several tackles and touched down wide out for his second, clinching try.
