Newtown's program of pre-season matches gets underway this Saturday evening when the Jets host the North Sydney Bears at Henson Park, with this NSW Cup trial game kicking off at 7pm.
Expectations are running high in the Newtown camp after the Jets embarked on an extensive off-season recruitment campaign. This year is the 100th anniversary of the club's first premiership victory in what was the former NSW Rugby League first grade competition and as Jets coach Greg Matterson puts it in typically straight-forward terms: "What better reason could there be for another Newtown premiership title?"
The Jets 2010 premiership quest will be spearheaded by a trio of giant front-rowers in Charlie Leaeno, Ryan Verlinden and Tim Weyman, who collectively weigh in at just under 360 kilograms. That's a lot of beef and muscle to back up the Jets on-field credentials as they strive for their first premiership win in the NSW Cup, the flagship competition of the modern-day NSW Rugby League.
Another Newtown player with plenty of personal incentive to achieve this season is stylish centre Tu'u Maori. The former Rooster and Shark has represented Papua-New Guinea in the past two years and with the Kumuls taking their place in the Four Nations Rugby League Championship at the end of this season, Maori has vowed to stake his claim for selection in the Papua-New Guinea team that will take on Australia, New Zealand and Great Britain.
The Newtown Jets play North Sydney at Henson Park this Saturday (February 13th) at 7pm, preceded by the Sydney Roosters and Bears playing junior representative fixtures as curtain-raisers at 4pm and 5.15pm. |
