They are a friendly bunch of young girls, but this weekend they will also be one tough bunch when they travel to Sydney to take on their city counterparts in rugby league as part of the Sydney Olympic Park Women in Sport Festival.

The team is made up of a total of 16 girls, a combination of players from Dubbo Junior Rugby Leagues PCYC and Eastridge women's teams aged between 16 and 18. The festival provides an opportunity to showcase not only women's sport but the fact rugby league is a viable sport for females.

As this is the first time rugby league has been included in the festival it will be the first time Dubbo Junior Rugby League have taken a women's team to the competition and PCYC coaching co-ordinator Max Hill is confident they will do well.

"I think they will put up a good show," he said. Although they'd like to come home with a few wins, Hill said it was more important to further their skills and promote the game of women's rugby league in the bush.

"I've told them it is not all about winning," he said. "But having fun and showing an interest in the sport." The girls will play three games in total, each with two fifteen-minute halves and nine players on the field at a time.

"Representatives from NSW Women's Rugby League will be present and will be using the games to scout for talent. Hill believes there are more than a few players in his team who selectors should keep an eye out for.

"I think we have about five or six girls who could make the selection for the NSW Maori side," Hill said. "Some of their skills are just so good, they are up there with some of the boys."

A skills clinic will also be run during the course of the day in between games for both spectators and players who want to have a go. At their training sessions held at Apex Oval on Wednesday nights Hill said the enthusiasm shown by the girls was impressive.

"Often it can be hard to get the girls motivated but these girls are excellent, they train very hard," he said. "They have learnt so much that now in the warm ups they are telling me what to do."

PCYC/Eastridge team to travel to Sydney: Sam Suckling, Taylor Peachey, Anna-Bel Day, Teah Stephens, Chelsea Flanders, Stephanie Jollitte, Latisha Carr, Teisha Boney, Sophie Kentwell, Britt Hall, Casey Toomey, Katlin Mason, Sharna Shillingsworth, Yasmine Kentwell, Nyoka Boney, Una Dennis.
