By David Bergin - Widnes Vikings have reported a healthy set of financial results to demonstrate the club's strong position for a Super League application. Accounts filed for the year to November 2009 show the club recorded a pre-tax profit of more than £1m on a turnover of £2.5m. This has been achieved while continuing to operate up to the Co-operative Championship salary cap limit.
It means the club is now debt-free and shows the success of the commercial strategies put in place since November 2007.
Widnes chairman Steve O'Connor said: "Since I became the chairman of the Vikings, I have had one goal in mind and that is to return this great club to where it belongs at the very top of rugby league as a full member of the Super League competition.
"I am very proud indeed to report that our club is free of debt and is in robust good health underpinned by a sustainable business plan.
"We have just appointed a new chief executive, and we are working hard to produce an irresistible licence application to the RFL board by November's deadline.
"The process of building and strengthening every part of our club in preparation to return to Super League is the number one priority of my management team at the Vikings.
"This starts with the finances of the business and is continued through the development of our outstanding young talent at this club as demonstrated by the performances of our academy and scholarship squads.
"It is for these reasons that I have such confidence for the future of the Vikings." |
