By Nathan Gilson - The prospects of the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs having a team in the NSW Cup competition next year are dead according to Workers Club CEO Peter Walker. The deal had been mooted after NSW Rugby League threatened that any Canberra Raiders players lining up in the Queensland Cup for feeder club Souths Logan would be banned from playing in the NRL.
As such, the Raiders had approached Goulburn as a possible entry into the NSW Cup competition.
But Canberra Raiders chairman John McIntyre was reported in last Friday's Canberra Times as saying the deal with Goulburn would not go ahead.
Walker confirmed McIntyre's comments to the Goulburn Post on Wednesday this week.
"At this point in time we are not pursuing any thoughts of a team in the NSW Cup competition," Walker said.
McIntyre was reported in the Canberra Times as saying the relationship with Souths Logan was important to the NRL club.
"As far as we're concerned, we'll continue to support Souths Logan," McIntyre said.
"But how we do that has to be worked out over the next couple of weeks after we sit down and have a chat with our mates at Souths Logan.
"Our view is the NSW Cup is a lesser competition for the development of players and we certainly want to continue our association with Souths Logan in the long term.
"The chances of anything happening with [the Raiders and] Goulburn are pretty remote." |
