St Helens have commemorated the greats who have graced Knowsley Road by naming an all-time best 17. To mark the farewell to the famous old stadium, a panel, consisting of members of the media, the Past Players Association, supporters and club Officials, chose what they considered to be the best players in the Saints' history.

A mouth-watering line-up has modern day greats like Cunningham, Wellens, Long and Sculthorpe sitting alongside legends such as Murphy, Coslett, Karalius and Van Vollenhoven.

"The panel had a very difficult choice in selecting 17 players from some of the greatest rugby league talent that not only the club has ever seen, but the game too," Saints chief executive Tony Colquitt said. They will be honoured at the club's 17 Greatest Saints Gala Dinner on October 15 where they will receive a special memento of being selected in the team.

The team will be previewed in the special programme that has been put together to commemorate the last ever league match at what is now known as the GPW Recruitment Stadium this Saturday, at home to Castleford Tigers (6.45pm).

Saints will have at least one play-off game to say their last goodbyes to the ground, but what they need to do to clinch second place in Super League depends on Warrington's result at Harlequins tonight.

The Greatest Saints team is: Alan Prescott (prop); Alex Murphy (scrum half); Alf Ellaby (winger); Chris Joynt (second row); Cliff Watson (prop); Dick Huddart (second row); Duggie Greenall (centre); George Nichols (second row); Keiron Cunningham (hooker); Kel Coslett (loose forward); Leslie Fairclough (stand-off); Paul Newlove (centre); Paul Sculthorpe (loose forward); Paul Wellens (full back); Sean Long (scrum half); Tom Van Vollenhoven (winger); Vince Karalius (loose forward).
