Two decades of pain evaporated for Orange CYMS after the green and golds claimed an emotional Group 10 premier league grand final win yesterday. CYMS held out a late charge from the Mudgee Dragons to win 23-16 at Orange's Wade Park.
It was CYMS' first Group 10 title in first grade since 1988, when they defeated Workies 20-19 in Lithgow.
But they were made to work for it every inch of the way against a gallant Dragons.
The hosts led 16-8 with 14 minutes to go before two Mudgee tries in the space of two minutes levelled the scores.
Orange CYMS captain-coach Michael Sullivan potted a field goal with four minutes left and unlikely hero Josh Nixon scored the match-winner for the second time in three games in the 78th minute.
Fittingly, Matt Williamson, the only remaining player from CYMS' last grand final appearance in 2002 - when they lost to Mudgee - was awarded man-of-the-match on his first Father's Day as a dad.
CYMS' outstanding defensive effort in the first half saw them trail just 8-6 at the break despite a mountain of possession for the Dragons in front of about 2000 spectators. |
