The Yass Magpies hopes of becoming a competition threat in 2011 have received a boost, with former Les McIntyre Medallist Tim Donovan signing with the club. Coach Mark Bell confirmed to the Tribune this week that Donovan, a Raiders premier league player and Canberra Raiders Cup best and fairest winner in 2006, would turn out for the Magpies next season.
Donovan was instrumental in helping the Scholars get off the ground in their debut season, the same year the Magpies broke their premiership drought with a 44- 18 grand final win over the Queanbeyan Blues.
In 2008, Donovan played fullback for the Gungahlin Bulls and finished the season as the competition's equal leading tryscorer.
Despite helping the Bulls qualify for the grand final, the elusive ball-runner was ruled out through injury and forced to watch the decider from the sideline.
"Everybody needs a player like Tim Donovan in their team," Bell said. "He'll bring a lot of leadership to the field. He's very keen to come and play in Yass. He'll be a great asset to the club and to the Yass community."
While Donovan is capable of playing anywhere in the backline, Bell indicated the club's marquee signing would play at halfback or five-eighth.
"He's one of the best players to play in the competition over the last five years. He can turn nothing into something," he said. |
