Common sense prevails in Group 9 Print E-mail

By Les Muir - Sanity prevailed when the Group Nine board torpedoed the idea of playing two finals games involving Wagga teams outside of the city this week. Rather than be howled down, the majority of the board agreed the best place to play these critical games featuring Brothers and Junee and Kangaroos and Tumut was at Equex Centre.

Harlequins chairman David Hughes says he is happy with the support package offered by the Rugby Football League. The governing body will provide assistance on the administration side of the Quins as the club continue to build the game in London. "We have fulfilled all of our targets over the last few years and we don't want to throw that all away," Hughes told the BBC's Super League Show.

By Stuart Honeysett - Petero Civoniceva has called for greater consistency with the send-off rule after Manly centre Steve Matai stayed on the field against Canterbury on Sunday despite being charged with the same offence for which the Penrith captain was marched. While Matai might have escaped the attention of the referees after knocking out Bulldogs hooker Michael Ennis with a late swinging arm, the match review committee didn't miss him.

Malcolm Alker, Salford's new assistant coach Print E-mail

Former Salford City Reds captain Malcolm Alker said he is fully focused on his new role as assistant coach under Shaun McRae. Alker, 31, has combined playing with a part-time coaching role this season but is now retiring from playing. He said "I'm basically Shaun's full-time assistant now, looking after the boys and just doing the assistant's role."

By Steve Deane - They have been blown away twice by the Titans this season, but the Warriors have some serious wind in their sails heading into Friday night's third meeting in the opening match of the NRL finals on the Gold Coast. Saturday night's trouncing of a full-strength Eels side saw the Warriors end the regular season with a 14-10 record. Nine of those wins came from their final 12 matches. That's championship pace.

By Ian Laybourn - Crusaders' former Great Britain coach Brian Noble has played down mounting speculation that he is set to quit the game. The ex-Bradford and Wigan boss, who has guided Crusaders to the play-offs in only their second year in the Engage Super League, is expected to step down at the end of the season and hand over the reins to Jon Sharp and Iestyn Harris.

The Des Hasler-coached Manly Sea Eagles will face a red-hot St George Illawarra as the most weakened side ever to enter a league finals series. The Daily Telegraph can today reveal the Sea Eagles have a staggering 14 players either already out or in doubt for Sunday's qualifying final against the minor premiers at Kogarah.
