RLCM Extract from RLCM eBook 36 By Tim Gabbett -How Should My Season Plan Look? - There has never been a team that has won a grand final in February. - With this in mind, coaches should plan the season with the goal of playing consistently competitive football throughout the season and peaking towards the end of the season  (i.e. as the finals series approaches). This, of course is easier said than done, as the remaining teams in the competition are also aiming to achieve this goal. Coaches should break the entire season into smaller training blocks and aim to achieve certain goals by the end of the training block.

For example, a 12-week off-season period maybe broken down into 2-3 smaller training blocks, with the goal of increasing aerobic fitness, muscle mass, general strength, and basic skill levels.

The in-season training programme should be focused on maintaining fitness and skill qualities developed during the off-season, while also enhancing game-specific fitness and skill levels (Table 3).

Due to the intensity and high number of physical collisions and tackles that occur during a match (on a week-to-week basis), it is very difficult to apply very high training loads during the competitive phase of the season.

Therefore, coaches should apply the majority of their ‘heavy’ training loads in the off-season training periods, remembering to progressively and gradually overload players.
