From RLCM Book 35 article titled Patterns of Play with David Kelly,  Page 3 of 4 chapter - Patterns in General Play ...... Kelly's patterns of play depend on an understanding of the terms "near post" and "far post", as well as a numeric division of the field's width. Above we discussed the "50", which is not the halfway line, but rather an imaginary line bisecting the breadth of the "30" to one side and the "70" to another. Importantly the terms are mirrored for both the right and left side players, so the "near post" for the left is in fact the "far post" for the right.

"What we are trying to achieve when working a pattern is to confuse the defence or take someone out of their line, which in turn will give you space," says Kelly. "By doing these types of patterns, it will hopefully have your players in tune with where they should be.

"You probably all have some good halfbacks and hookers who can play off the top of their heads. I encourage that and I'm sure you do as well. But these patterns are for when that doesn't work and they can fall back into this structure and give everyone a clear picture of what they need to do."

1. Near Post - Playing for the near post typically begins with one hit-up by the front-rower and then another ruck which takes the ball to the 30 (30% across the width of the field, based on which side possession was gained in).

From there it is up to the hooker whether to attack the blind side or push towards the open side. Kelly likes to attack the blind side with numbers or a cut-out ball and then put a kick in. An easy way to be accurate in reaching the 30 on the second tackle is to use a dummyhalf scoot if you are close, or use a pivot if you need more width to reach the target.

2. Far Post - This option allows more width in attack over the course of possession, with the halfback likely to feature more prominently. This time your prop works to the 50 on the first tackle, followed by a pass off the playmaker to a backrower for the second tackle. Again the hooker may exploit the blind on number three, but the halfback will also be involved and ready to find gaps.

A clever ploy is to have the half cut across the back of the ruck to the blind side, creating an extra man. He can then straighten and put outside runners into a hole, or perhaps turn it back inside to a trailing hooker, depending on the reaction of the marker defence. If the half remains on the open side, the back line should be assembled and ready.

3. Work the 50 - Again taking two tackles to reach your target, send a prop and then a second rower to the midpoint of the field. At this stage you should have your halfback to one side and your five-eighth to the other side, with their outside runners ready in formation.

"Then it is up to your hooker to use his vision," Kelly says. "Again, that's something you've got to coach to a degree, because not all players are gifted with analysing the game." If the team opts to run to the right side, the next play should be to fresh players on the left, with either the halfback or five-eighth moving across to the open side to create an extra link.

POINTS TO REMEMBER
• A fullback can be used like a wild card. They can either create an extra man out wide or they can be used in close, perhaps as a five-eighth if you require an extra running forward or ease the burden on existing play-makers.

• Every coach wants a halfback that gets involved, but also be wary of
your number seven overplaying his hand and getting in the way of team mates. "You've got to tell them when they should come in and take control and when they need to step back so the five-eighth or lock can run some plays and the forwards can ruck it out," says Kelly.

• By the same token, a coach and his assistants also need to know when to let go. "I know nowadays you have trainers who go on to deliver messages, but I think you can over-coach situations," Kelly says. "If you have your players trained well throughout the week and the key men are switched on, there's no need for the trainer."

Kelly says he has seen instances where a trainer has disrupted or confused the team by calling a play when the team is already on track

• There's no point setting up patterns to give your ball-runners opportunities if they don't know how to effectively run at gaps. Aside from drilling these players, it's important the hooker gives them confidence by hitting them on the chest with their passes, no matter the angle.

• Teams may have an "over-ride" call, which nullifies the intended play and allows the attack to focus on a weakness or opportunity that has just appeared. It is important that the call is used sparingly and wisely.
